What is extra-provincial registration?

What province do I need to register in? When do you need to register federally?

A corporation can be incorporated provincially or federally. For most small businesses, you would not need to go to the extent of a federal incorporation.

The main difference between federal and provincial incorporation is that federal incorporation gives your business increased business name protection and wider rights to carry on business throughout the entire country.

Being federally incorporated will mean that you can conduct business across Canada under the same business name, even if a company is already using a similar name in another province or territory.
